| Pantone® Limited are a company which is respected throughout the print industry for the quality and consistency of their colour matching products.
 The Pantone colour matching system is an international colour system that is used throughout printing, publishing and packaging industries to provide an accurate method for the selection, reproduction and matching of colour. It is the most widely used system of its kind and creates a standardization of colour to which very close matches can be made when printing.
Pantone Colours and Spot Colour Printing
For printing in spot colours Pantone supply a number of colour 'swatches' (The Pantone Colour Guides). These are lists of all the colours available showing exactly how they look once printed. It is possible to achieve a very close match to these colours as each one is mixed before use on the printing press. Swatches are available on different papers as this will affect how the colour looks, e.g. Uncoated paper will allow the ink to soak further in and colours will therefore look duller.
Pantone Colours and Full Colour Printing
When printing in full colour an exact match to Pantone colours cannot be made as four inks are used and mixed in different quantities across a sheet of paper to produce full colour images. Having said this, it is much better to choose and use colours from printed swatches than to rely on the appearance of colours on a monitor - especially if no calibration has been carried out, as they will nearly always be closer to the final product.
